Who Are We?

Prayer at the end of the day

Preparation

Holy Spirit of the living God,
at the end of this day
as we lay ourselves down to rest, surround and protect us while we sleep.
Be the guardian of our souls and bodies
as we commend ourselves into your safe keeping
until a new day dawns and the world wakes again.
This we ask in the name of the Lord Jesus. Amen.

Opening song of praise:

1 Answer me when I call, O God of my right!
You gave me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.
2 How long, you people, shall my honour suffer shame?
How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies?
3 But know that the LORD has set apart the faithful for himself;
the LORD hears when I call to him.
4 When you are disturbed,* do not sin;
ponder it on your beds, and be silent.
5 Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the LORD.
6 There are many who say, ‘O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O LORD!’
7 You have put gladness in my heart
more than when their grain and wine abound.
8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O LORD, make me lie down in safety.

Psalm 4

Scripture:

Hebrews 4. 9-11

So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; for those who enter God’s rest also cease from their labours as God did from his. Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest.

Or:

Song of Songs 8. 6-7

6 Set me as a seal upon your heart,
as a seal upon your arm;
for love is strong as death,
passion fierce as the grave.
Its flashes are flashes of fire,
a raging flame.
7Many waters cannot quench love,
neither can floods drown it.
If one offered for love
all the wealth of one’s house,
it would be utterly scorned.

Or:

1 Peter 5. 8-9

8Discipline yourselves; keep alert.* Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters* throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.

Prayers:

At the end of the day we pray for:
  • those who are afraid of the night
  • those who will die this night
  • those who are tortured and abused
  • all for whom tomorrow holds unexpected things

As our Saviour has taught us so we pray:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power,
and the glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.

May the living God, creating, redeeming, sustaining

Bless us all, now and for always. Amen.
