Spirituality is about having:
- a sense that life is very special, sacred, holy - something to be greatly valued
- an awareness of the needs and lives, pain and joy of others – it has a practical dimension
- an alertness to the transcendent (divine or 'godness') – a feeling-knowledge that life is more than what appears before our eyes.
- a consciousness that there is a purpose or direction to our living
- a belief that there is more to life than materialism and that
we have stories to share with each other
- a realisation that our bodies and senses are how we experience
life – so we need to nurture them as we try to feed our souls
Our spirituality grows with us as we change – especially if we learn
to explore it more

Spirituality and personality
Spirituality and personality
People are waking up to the fact that because we all have
different personalities this will affect the way we are as spiritual
people.
You can buy books on the subject, but here is a place to start
thinking -
- People are either 'introvert' or 'extrovert'. What follows is
a huge generalisation, but:
- 'Extroverts' get their energy, their spiritual 'fix' from
things outside of themselves:
- other people, interacting with the world, standing before great
beauty, nature etc or by using objects to help
- them focus or access their spiritual dimension: incense, stones,
crosses, images.
- 'Introverts' get in touch with their spiritual side from what
is inside of them. They close their eyes to the world and 'centre
themselves' and go deep down inside to reach their spiritual 'heart',
'centre', or 'stream'.
- While 'extroverts' and 'introverts' have a natural preference
to be like this, often they can learn a great deal by exploring their
other side: 'extroverts' trying to explore their 'introvert'
dimension etc.
What can you do to be more in tune with your spiritual side?
Remembering that our spirituality is like a collage...
- keep some 'sacred' objects on your desk, in your room, at your
place of work or on your person:
- anything that will speak to you and remind you of your deeper
self and the bigger picture:
- symbols, images, texts and quotations, anything that will have
significance for you alone
- try to begin each day with a sense of thankfulness simply for
being here and being open to all that a new day will bring
- spend at least 5 minutes everyday looking at the world and
finding something of beauty in it
- learn to live with your imperfections, for no-one is perfect,
and try to be more tolerant of the imperfections of others
- deal with others as you would have them deal with you
- look for the meaning and purpose in the work that you do. And
you will find it.
- do one good thing for someone else
- make sure you catch up with the world news each day then spend 5 minutes at the end of your day looking back over it.
Remember the best thing that happened… and also one thing that could
have been done differently. Then let go of the whole day by saying
Thank You.
- Make time each day to be open to the unfolding of your spirituality….
If you have extrovert tendencies:
-
Go and sit in a crowded place and notice the people around you:
how different they are; imagine what their stories might be; look for the divine in each of
them; pray for them;
- Go and talk to someone who looks in need of conversation
- Find a place to volunteer that will bring you into contact with
other people
- Join a group or church that suits your spirituality
- Get involved in the struggles for justice of people other than yourself
- Go to the prayer page of the site for more ideas
- Also try to explore your shadow side by exploring some of the things suggested for 'introverts'.
If you have introvert tendencies:
- Find space alone to recharge your batteries; take 10 or 15
minutes to be absolutely still and silent; do a crossword, look at a picture, think of a phrase or quotation that you like – and repeat it slowly to yourself.
- Learn to 'centre down'; imagine that you are going deep down inside yourself and making contact with your very essence, that small light at your very heart; stay there for as long as you can and be open to what you hear.
- Go for a slowish walk by yourself; notice things and people; smile or nod at them; pray for them; find a place to stop and just be.
- Join a group or church that suits your spirituality
- Get involved in the struggles for justice of people
other than yourself
- Go to the prayer page of the site for more ideas
- Also try to explore your shadow side by exploring some of the
things suggested for 'extroverts'.
